InnoTrans 2018 News: Giv’em what they want: TIME

Giv’em what they want: TIME

Working in the sector of public transport, you face a demanding clientele: a service user, who wants to travel from A to B as cheap, comfortable and above all punctual as possible. The difficulties of coordination behind those efforts are secondary. Optimising the timetable for the entire network plays a major role here. A feature available with the new release of PTV Visum 18 improves your travel chain and supports your service by optimising your punctuality.

No matter whether Deutsche Bahn, Schweizerische or Österreichische Bundesbahnen: Each railway company manages a highly complex overall network, which is subject to continuous optimisation under the following aspects:

  • Improve travel chain punctuality and hence increase customer satisfaction
  • Further attractive timetable offers for customer retention and new customer acquisition with more sustainable transport solutions
  • Improved evaluation and prioritisation of infrastructure investments and operational measures from an economic point of view

Using PTV Visum, you are already examining all connections with regard to time, costs and quality. With the new release PTV Visum 18 it is now also possible to evaluate the timetable planning process. In the case of partly competing purposes, an overall optimised timetable for the entire network can thus be created..

Let them be on time
For the first time, it is possible to identify critical connections in the travel chain in the event of delays and to adapt them so that the customer achieves these connections with high reliability in operational reality. PTV Visum 18 does this using a newly developed algorithm that reliably assesses the probability of delays and their influence on reaching the connections in the timetable. Within a comparatively short period of a few hours, thousands of delay scenarios and their interaction in the planned overall network are calculated. The responsible person recognizes critical connections (e.g. connections that are too short but in high demand) and can thus define and re-evaluate targeted improvement measures taking into account different perspectives (e.g. operational perspective/cost perspective…).

With PTV Visum 18 a very high accuracy of fit between the timetable and the real operation can be achieved in the planning. This even makes it possible to make recommendations for future action from a planning point of view. In an expanded version, these recommendations for action could also be transmitted to the customer in real time in the future.
